Assessment for Plant Medicine Treatments
To be eligible for plant medicine you must:
- Have a condition that has lasted for 3+ months
- Have tried other treatments which didn’t fully improve your condition or produced unwanted side effects
- Not be pregnant or have a history of psychosis
Plant Therapy Program
Once we’ve had our first meeting and learned more about your needs, you’ll join our plant medicine program with a Medmate clinician. This program covers:
– Learning about your medical conditions.
– Developing a custom treatment plan.
– Getting approval for plant based therapy.
– Organising prescriptions and medication delivery.
– Making a schedule for regular check-ins with our Medmate nursing and medical team.
Plant Based Medications and Medmate
If the doctor decides that medicine should be part of your treatment plan, Medmate will work with partner pharmacies that have the medicine you need. The cost will include the medicine and delivery to your home. Your doctor will help you choose the right medicine based on your health.
Medmate doesn’t give out one-time plant based prescriptions. Our doctors need to keep an eye on how you’re doing, check for any side effects, and provide prescriptions only to patients who are in our long-term care program.

What is plant based therapy used for?
Plant based medications are mainly prescribed by doctors to assist with management of pain or symptoms associated with serious medical conditions, including:
- Cancer pain and/or symptoms.
- To relieve vomiting resulting from chemotherapy (a cancer treatment).
- Severe epilepsy (seizures).
- Treating muscle spasticity and pain in Multiple Sclerosis.
- Pain caused by nervous system damage.
- Palliative care – to relieve pain or symptoms related to a terminal illness.
What are plant based medications?

Modern plant based medications are considered safe and can be effective for treatment of several medication conditions.
Your clinician may prescribe these medicines as part of your care program.
Who can access plant based treatments?
As the possession and use of non-medicinal plant medicines is illegal in most Australian states and territories, special permission is needed to access plant therapy for medicinal purposes. Only registered Australian Doctors can apply for approval to prescribe plant medicine for medical purposes. Once approved, Doctors may then prescribe plant medicine for management of some conditions under the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Special Access Scheme (SAS).
Are the medications safe?
Our clinical team will conduct a thorough health assessment and eligibility review. Prescription of medications will be contingent upon their safety in your specific circumstances.
Following consultation with your health practitioner, details about the medications available in the program will be disclosed and explained fully, in compliance with advertising regulations.
For individuals with a personal or family history that may slightly elevate the risk of rare side effects, your health practitioner will prioritize caution and suggest alternative options in such cases.
How much does Medmate's plant based therapy program cost?
The commencement cost of this program (including the assessment, approval for prescriptions and coordination of delivery) is $79.
Ongoing consultations are $35.
Medication costs (including delivery) are dependent on the treatment that is decided upon in collaboration with the doctor.
When do I receive my medications?
Consults are available daily.
Once your medication program has been approved, delivery takes approx 3-5 days from the pharmacy.
