General Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I always colder than everyone else? Is this something I should get checked out?

Feeling colder than others can be normal or attributed to an underlying medical issue such as amnesia, dehydration, low thyroid function or hormonal conditions. While feeling colder than others might not always be a cause for concern, it is advised to consult a local GP for examination and investigations if your symptoms are persistent.

Why do my hands hurt when I pass water?

This is an unusual symptom and not easy to answer. You will have to see your local GP for an examination and possible investigations. Possible causes range from systemic conditions like SLE or Raynaud’s or issues with the hands themselves like carpal tunnel. Why you are experiencing the symptoms while urinating is difficult to answer. Definitely book an appointment with your local GP as a next step.

What should I put in my medicine bag when travelling overseas?

It obviously depends on where you are going. Travelling to remote or tropical locations can be very different to urban locations. In general, when traveling overseas it’s essential to pack a well-stocked medicine bag to address common health issues and emergencies. Items to include in your medicine bag are:

  • Prescription medicines – bring your necessary prescriptions, along with a copy of the prescription and a letter from your doctor explaining your medical condition and the need for the prescribed medication.
  • Over-the-counter medications
    • Pain relief and fever: Paracetamol and ibuprofen (check your allergies with the pharmacist).
    • Travellers’ diarrhea: Rehydration solution such as Hydralyte.
    • First-aid items: Include adhesive bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, and a digital thermometer. Adhesive tape like Rock Tape is very useful.
  • Hygiene and sexual health products / Dental Care / Insect Repellent – particularly important in tropical locations with risk of malaria or dengue. Tropical strength insect repellent is very important to use at dawn and dusk.
  • Sunscreen and hat – always be aware and protect yourself against sun exposure.
  • Travel insurance details – good idea to confirm ahead what health facilities you can access with your insurance while overseas.
  • Emergency contact details – make sure to pack these items in your carry-on bag to have them accessible during your trip.

Consulting a doctor and addressing lifestyle factors may help improve performance. Adjust your diet, sleep habits, and training routine. Rest more, eat more and reduce weekly mileage to get back on track.

Diabetes

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Globally, Type 2 diabetes affects 6% of the world’s population and is one of the greatest contributors to Australia’s burden of disease. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease of high blood sugar (glucose) due to insulin resistance. Your cells are resistant to the intake of glucose in response to insulin and your body gradually reduces its ability to produce normal levels of insulin. As a result, your blood glucose level is raised.

What causes Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetes has genetic factors. If you have a family history of diabetes, you have a higher risk of developing the condition.

Modifiable risk factors are associated with the development of the condition. These include obesity, high blood pressure, insufficient physical activity, poor diet and excessive alcohol intake.

What are the symptoms for Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetes initially presents with vague symptoms, so many people may not know that they have diabetes despite having diabetes. The usual symptoms include fatigue or feeling of being worn out, frequent urination, blurred vision, a sense of being hungry, and increased thirst due to higher blood glucose. In long-standing diabetes, your immune system becomes weak, so there are frequent bacterial and viral infections and poor wound healing.

Dietary

How much water should I drink each day?

The amount of water a person should drink per day depends on several factors such as age, sex, weight, physical activity levels, background medical conditions and climate. 8 glasses of water per day on average is a good starting point, consult your local GP for more specific advice.

How important is breakfast?

Breakfast provides the body with energy and nutrients after a long period of fasting overnight. Eating breakfast has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, people who eat breakfast tend to have better cognitive function, improved mood, and lower levels of stress throughout the day.

Are vitamin supplements effective?

Vitamin supplements may be beneficial for certain individuals who are at risk of nutritional deficiencies, such as pregnant women, older adults, and those with malabsorptive conditions. For example, the vitamins which are required by expecting females in higher quantities include Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Selenium, Copper, Zinc, Folic Acid, and Iron. However, a balanced diet remains the best way to obtain all the necessary vitamins and minerals for optimal health.

How important is fibre in your diet and how much should I have per day?

Fibre is crucial for a healthy diet, aiding bowel regularity and reducing the risk of diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and bowel cancer. It also promotes satiety and weight management. Aim for the recommended 30g of fibre per day by consuming whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts.
